Custom software development in Ireland: when the shelf has nothing on it
Custom software development in Ireland usually starts after the alternative has been tried. There is a subscription for the CRM, another for the booking tool, a spreadsheet holding the two together, and a person whose job is quietly copying data between them. Custom software is what you build when that stops scaling.

When should you build custom software instead of buying it?
Buy first. That is the honest default. Off-the-shelf software is cheaper on day one, somebody else maintains it, and for standard jobs such as accounting or payroll it is almost always the right call. Bespoke software only earns its keep when the standard product makes you fit its process instead of yours.
The signs that you have crossed that line are usually plain:
- The work that makes you money runs on a process no product supports, so you bend the process to fit the tool.
- Two or more systems hold the same data, none of them agrees, and somebody re-keys it by hand.
- A spreadsheet has become a system of record, with formulas nobody dares to touch.
- The report you need to run the business takes a day to assemble every month.
- Customers or members email you for things they should be able to do for themselves.

Internal tools and dashboards
The screens your team lives in are usually the last thing anyone designs, growing out of a shared spreadsheet or a CRM bent out of shape. Internal tools and dashboards are where custom software pays back fastest: the users are your own staff, the workflow is already known, and every minute saved repeats every day.
We build the tool around the job, not the data model. The order desk sees orders, the operations lead sees exceptions, the director sees the three numbers that matter and can click through to the detail. Reporting comes from one source of truth rather than four exports stitched together on a Friday. In ESMA’s case that meant an admin where a governance workflow with real states, per-member analytics and four gated content types are managed in one place instead of across four tools.
Process automation and integrations
Most manual work in a growing business is the same small handoffs, repeated: the quote re-typed into the invoice, the booking copied into the calendar, the form submission chased. Automation removes the copying; integration removes the reason for it.
Integration is usually the point of the project rather than an add-on, and we check every connection is possible before it is quoted. Where a step needs judgement, a person stays in the loop at a clear review point. Where it is pure repetition, it runs on its own. Replacing spreadsheets and legacy systems without the big-bang risk
The most common reason a custom software project fails is not the code. It is the cut-over: a Friday-night switch, with the whole business waiting to find out what broke.
A replacement runs alongside what it replaces. One workflow moves first, usually the one causing the most pain, while the old system keeps running for everything else. Data is migrated, reconciled and checked against the original before anyone relies on it. The next workflow moves only when the new system has carried real work for real people, and the old one is retired when nothing is left in it. Nobody is ever without a working system.
Customer portal development, booking systems and membership platforms
Some of the strongest custom software we build is the kind your customers touch. A customer portal turns a stream of emails into self-service: accounts, documents, bookings and workflows behind a secure login. A booking system that fits how you sell removes the third-party ticketing fee and the lock-in with it. A membership platform gives an association one searchable record of its members. A membership platform with a native app. ESMA International Network is a fifty-year-old FMCG trade network with 200 member companies across 62 countries and no way to show its own value. We built a custom Laravel platform: a public site, a member dashboard and native iOS and Android apps on the same data, with a five-axis member taxonomy, an invitation-only application workflow and gated content. No plugin does that combination. It is live on the web and in both app stores.
A booking engine built from scratch. ERP HEADtoHEAD is Lumenia Consulting’s ERP comparison event, run as two editions in two countries and two currencies by two separate legal entities. We rebuilt the site and engineered a booking and payments engine as a WordPress plugin: per-entity Stripe Checkout, headless WooCommerce so every booking is a full order, gapless per-entity invoice numbering, and a unique QR per delegate for door check-in. One site now runs two international events with no third-party ticketing fees.
A booking-first website rebuild. Trident Holiday Homes lets self-catering holiday homes across Ireland, booked direct, so the website is the business. Delivered through our partner Altitude, the rebuild started from thirty days of real session data: a live map paired with filters, and a reserve component on the property page so a guest can hold a date without leaving it.

What does custom software cost in Ireland?
The consult tells you, which is why we do it first. What we can say up front is how the number is built: by the number of distinct workflows, the number of systems the software has to talk to, how much data has to be migrated, and whether customers will use it as well as staff.
As a working anchor, custom software projects with Loco start from €10,000, and the consult states the full figure before anything is built. One thing to know before you budget: the Local Enterprise Office Grow Digital Voucher does not cover custom or bespoke software. It funds new off-the-shelf software subscriptions, training and IT configuration, and has a Digital for Business prerequisite. The Enterprise Ireland Innovation Voucher is not an alternative either: it must be spent with a registered knowledge provider such as a university, and excludes software and website development (Enterprise Ireland).
You own the code, the data and the accounts
Custom software is only an asset if you own it. Everything we build for you is yours: the code, the data, the hosting accounts and the documentation. There is no platform tax per seat.
Handover is part of the build. The repository is yours from the start, the infrastructure lives in accounts you control, and the documentation is written so another developer could pick it up. If you would rather we kept looking after it, most of our clients have stayed with us for years: a monthly retainer from €2,000/month covers development hours, priority fixes, hosting, monitoring and backups, with a senior contact who knows your stack.
